Samskip starts short-sea traffic between Iceland and APM Terminals in Gothenburg

April 5 will see the very first arrival of the Iceland-owned shipping company Samskip at APM Terminals Gothenburg, kicking off the major short-sea investment between Gothenburg and Europe.

As of 5 April 2023, Samskip will be calling weekly at APM Terminals’ newly renovated quay, specially adapted for short-sea traffic. The ship will then sail on to Aarhus, Runavik in the Faroe Islands and on to Reykjavik, before arriving in Rotterdam four days later.

“We are pleased and proud to announce that Samskip has chosen to redirect its route via APM Terminals in Gothenburg. The new call to port not only offers a lifeline between Iceland and Sweden, but also marks the start of a competitive and sustainable short-sea offering from the Nordic region’s largest container port to the continent,” says Brian Bitsch, Commercial Manager at APM Terminals.

“We are pleased that the solution has come to fruition, and we see clear benefits in calling the port of Gothenburg. We look forward to being able to offer our customers the extensive rail network from APM Terminals Gothenburg to the Swedish hinterland. The combination of shipping and rail is by far the most climate-efficient way of transporting containers, and sustainability is one of the most important foundations in our business,” says Kenn Mellgren, Operations Manager at Samskip.

“It is very pleasing that our work to create the conditions for well-functioning intra-European traffic from APM Terminals Gothenburg has produced results, and we are ready to meet future needs,” concludes Brian Bitsch.
